First grade teacher Ashley Sinclair is in her ninth year of teaching at BFCS. With just eleven students in her class, Ashley has time to work with each student one-on-one. “Everything is individualized to the student,” she says. Reading is done individually and in small groups. There’s lots of “buddy talking” in her class. Writing goes with what’s being read.
Everything is hands on - especially science. “We do more science than other schools,” she says. “We have a dedicated time for science every day. We do air and weather, animals and plants. We hatch chicks in an incubator. We observe the seasons. There’s lots of outdoor stuff.
Math is hands on too. We use cubes and other shapes. “It’s manipulative,” says Ashley. “The kids are so excited to learn. They support each other.”
