Sarah Chavez teaches Kindergarten and Science for BFCS grades 5 and 6. She also works with a teaching assistant, lovingly nicknamed “Melty,” to lead gardening classes. So far the elementary school has a butterfly garden, an herb garden, and two raised beds for vegetables.
Sarah likes the flexibility of a charter school curriculum. “We can do more science and art than at other schools where I have taught,” says Sarah. “We do an hour of science every day.”
“For grades 5 and 6, we go to ‘Outdoor School’ every year. Sometimes it’s at the coast. We’ve also been to Fort Klamath and to the Deer Creek Center in Selma.”
“We work well as a team at BFCS,” says Sarah. “We do a lot of things together. Older kids read to younger ones. The students act like it’s a big family.”
