Sarti Powell is the veteran at Butte Falls Charter School. She’s been teaching at BFCS for 18 years, well before it became a charter school. Sarti teaches grades 3-4, and is also the Response Intervention Coordinator for the school.
Sarti says, unlike BFCS High School where students spend much of their time learning about natural resources, elementary students are more focused on building basic skills. But even the little ones get outdoors.
“We took our class to MacGregor Park for a ranger-led program on riparian zones, salmon, and water quality,” she says.
Sarti is proud of the quick response that BFCS teachers are able to offer students who need extra help with reading and other academic skills. “Even though we’re small we can intervene with every Kindergarten through 6th grade student who needs help. It provides a good foundation for our students as they enter middle school.”
